The JP161 single French horn is designed for children, featuring a 'small wrap' to make it smaller than a full-size horn. This design allows a child to put their right hand correctly into the bell while maintaining the proper posture for playing. The JP161 is the Bb side, and its counterpart, the JP162, is the F side. Both horns read horn in F music and transpose a 5th.

There is ongoing debate among French horn teachers regarding whether to start new pupils on the 'Bb' or 'F' side. The Bb side is considered easier for pitching, but both sides must be learned since horn players need proficiency in both. It's essential to check with your teacher to ensure you purchase the correct single horn, as some teachers focus only on the Bb side, while others focus solely on the F side.
